Proverbial Wilderness

I wanted to give a shout out to the things that have been giving me a little bit of joy lately. Sometimes it is the little things that keep me going.

Pepsi Throwback. I think I might like it better than Dr. Pepper. Maybe.

Gummy candy and Sees lollipops. Anything gummy has been so wonderful to me lately. And these suckers have always been one of my favorite things.

My new black hoodie that I got at Target for 5 bucks. It's so warm and cozy. Plus it goes with my black hair, black nail polish, black eyeliner, black eye shadow, and black mascara.

The line up of snow clothes. I feel so happy when this stuff gets some use. Especially because they can mostly put all of it on by themselves.

So good. Can't wait until the 13th.

So so good.

Here comes some cheese...

All of these things are great, but I would throw it all away a million times just to see my family happy. That makes me the happiest of all. And it is a real happy. A happy that can't be replaced.
My family gives me more joy than I could ever deserve. Even though sometimes they are the ones who are making me crazy, they are always the ones who make me the happiest. Especially when I concentrate on their needs and not my own. They all become manageable and wonderful. I wonder how I ever get mad at any of them in the first place. Or how I can be sad with them around. I love feeling like I live with the 6 most perfect people in the world. I just need to remember that more often...

Decending

It is hard for me not to imagine snowboarding every time I see this mountain. And I see this mountain at least 3 times a day, everyday. It hurts me. {sniff sniff}

Isn't it beautiful? We love the snow. The kids can't get enough of it this week. They are spending hours in the front yard. Every night I have to put their snow clothes in the dryer so they will be ready for the next day. I accidentally dried the hoods of their jackets when I wasn't supposed to. The fur doesn't look quite the same. Bummer. I suck. Laundry is my sucking specialty.

The snow was too heavy for them to lift one ball on top of the other to make a snowman, so they just put the balls in a row and made a caterpillar...

It's not done yet. But I love it.

Trophies

I think I have mentioned before that G is the biggest contrarian I have had. And I have some bad ones. He started early, and he has just gotten worse. I have almost given up trying to tell him what things are. He never believes me. It's not just me. He does it with everyone. It cracked me up the other day when I overheard this exchange...

Mads: Hey Dad, do you want to play cars with me?
Nate: Sure.
Mads: You can me this car, and I'll be the jet.
Nate: Do you know what kind of jet that is, Mads?
Mads: No. What kind?
Nate: It's an F-15.
G: No! Eighteen!

I didn't even know he knew the number 18. I guess being stinky brings out the best in him.

Singing in 2010

We spent New Year's Eve with the Wests. I'm going to be honest, I was a little worried about spending 6 straight hours with them. Turns out, I was right to be worried. It was torture!

Just kidding. We had an awesome time. First we had dinner. Then we listened to music. Then we got out there karaoke machine, of course. That is clearly the next step to create an awesome New Year's Eve party.
G loves microphones! And singing! Anyone who has ever sat by us at church knows that when we sing, G is always the loudest and most enthusiastic. He pretty much just made noise constantly in the microphone. It didn't get irritating at all.

Eew. I look tired.
Suzy was by far my favorite person that night. She did a beautiful rendition of 'Love is Strange'. I tried to be her duet, but I was laughing too hard. Luckily one of the boys saved us and turned the song off.

Then we played a bunch of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. We learned that Cody is not a team player. And we ate lots of snacks. Our new hot chocolate maker was a big hit.

G and G (Gavs) were the only two who didn't make it to midnight. Luckily Suze provided plenty of pots and spoons.

These kids were doing this while Ethan was riding his bike around. Crazy kid. It was freezing and there was ice everywhere.
Even though we were the Wests 6th choice of company, we were glad they invited us over.

Plaid

The girls got Christmas/Winter dresses from Grammy. She made them, and they are gorgeous. The girls loved them, of course. They got mad at me for making them take them off right away after church. I was informed by my mother that they are "DRY CLEAN ONLY!" They are lucky I let them wear them long enough to take this picture.

*****

This was the night after my family Christmas party. We went to Tom and Theresa's for dinner. My parents were there, and Monica and her family were in town also. It was a really great time. We played a game with white elephant-type gifts that no one wanted to end.

Christmas Morning

We didn't buy a lot of presents this year because Wesley was their Christmas present. And although I love buying gifts for my kids, it felt much less stressful not having to worry about presents. They still had a blast on Christmas morning opening a few gifts from us, and all the ones from family.

Mads got a flashlight. Seriously made him so happy. He carries (carriED, since he lost it recently) it everywhere and is very resourceful.

Christmas Eve

We've started our own tradition of fondue on Christmas Eve. Last year we did cheese for dinner, but not all the kids loved it, so we decided to skip it this year. But we didn't want to skip the chocolate.
Like our fondue pot? We're just not that fancy over here.

I was going to skip the catch-up, but I decided it was worth it.

With My Own Family

I've been trying to get back in the mood to blog. But in the meantime, here are a few of our new family pictures...

This is my favorite. That is why it made it to the Christmas card.

I love looking at the progression of the perfect photo.

I'm glad Rhon's smile became slightly more real after this one.

I'm sure they were supposed to be looking at the camera. Oh well. The smiles are all real.

Could Nate look any hotter? No. No he could not.

Namaste

We call this, "Sun Salutation".

K, I think I have exposed my youngest child enough on this blog. This is the last time you will see his nakedness. I'm not making any promises, but I'm going to try.

Griff,
It is really difficult NOT to take a picture of you when you are naked. You are going to have to give me a break on this one. Come on, it is pretty funny, don't you think?

The Fourth

Have I mentioned who is my favorite lately? Well, Mads has been at the top of the list more often than not. He is so cool. He is at such a fun age, and I am soaking up all the boyishness he is throwing at me.

He loves flashlights. He carries one around all day. He has already broken 3 of our flashlights we keep around the house for emergencies. I don't even know how he found them. He currently has another one he found somewhere. Hopefully it lasts longer. I think I will just get him flashlights for Christmas. He will be in heaven.

He has a talent for quoting movies. He gets the voice right, and uses the gestures too. Recently we have heard, "Fire power!" a lot. It is from Night at the Museum. He says it just like the Thinker, and he flexes his muscles. He is also a big fan of quoting Nacho Libre. Often times, when he is getting his jams on, he pulls the bottoms up really high and says, "stretchy pants". And I'm not surprised when he calls me or the girls, "Queen of filth." (The Princess Bride.)

He loves the snow. Playing in the snow is one of the only activities he will do by himself. He knows I won't go out there with him, so he won't even ask. The other day, when he was playing outside, he came in saying his eyes were burning. (It was really bright- lots of white and lots of sun.) He doesn't have any sunglasses, so he asked if I could get Dare's for him. After that he was good! I loved that he would rather play than care that he was wearing his sister's sunglasses.

He whines a lot. But he is trying really hard to get out of the habit.

He never gets the names of meals right. He asks what we are having for lunch at dinner, and what we are having for breakfast at dessert time. I think he gets this from Dare. She still gets them wrong.

He is slightly obsessed with video games. I am kind of embarrassed to admit it. He is only 3, and he can beat the New Super Mario Bros. Okay, I am a little impressed too. He must get that from me. Nate has nothing to do with that talent. (Ha ha.) But we have limited his time drastically. It is just hard because I know that if he picks up the DS, he will be quiet and content for an hour or so.

He is learning to read. He knows all the letters and sounds, so we are starting to sound words out. He loves books. I only wish I could read to him more often. Two of his favorites are the Arthur books we have- Arthur's Glasses and The Reading Race.

He loves Wesley. Seeing them together really makes me feel like getting a puppy was a good choice. When Wesley went to the vet one day Mads was really sad. He kept asking when he would be home. And he told me he missed and loved him.

He has been sleeping in my room every night for the past week. He gets scared.

Every day when I drop the girls off at school he asks if he can sit in Dare's seat. His seat is in the back, and he likes to move up when the girls are gone. Then he and I talk non-stop until we get home. He always has lots to say.

He loves to play "Cars". This is when he has a car, and I (or anyone else he can sucker into playing with him) has a car, and we pretend they talk. His car always boasts about how fast he is, or how he can fly. Sometimes we save other cars from utter destruction, or go on trips to the store. Let's just say that his attention span for this game is much higher than mine.

He wants me to sing to him every night when I put him to bed. Sometimes he sings with me, but other times he just watches me and smiles. Most of the time he requests 'Popcorn Popping'.

When I tell him he is my favorite 3 year old, he gets grouchy and says he wants to be four. It is coming all too soon I'm afraid.

I Declared a Snow Day

Really, I did. We all called in today!

Turkey, Snow Boots, Ears, and Farts

November 26th
We made our own Thanksgiving dinner. All the kids helped. Well, G wasn't so much helping as he was being a big fat pain in the rear. But that's okay. We all enjoyed ourselves. We had Aspen and her girls over. After a good dinner, cleaning up about 76 drink spills, and pie, we ended the night with some Rock Band.
I thought it was hilarious that he fell asleep with a snow boot on his hand. Of course he has his dark-dark blue blanket, and he is sucking on his tongue. I was glad cooking bored him enough to take a nap.

November 27th

I am not a Black Friday shopper, but in the afternoon we decided we wanted to go out for a bit. First we went to Old Navy and got some sweaters. Then we decided to go to the mall. Right when we walked in I saw this ear piercing booth. It wasn't even on my radar, but we decided to go for it. All three of the girls wanted to do it. They did. And they all three cried. Rhon was the bravest, so she went first. Dare tried really hard not to cry on the first ear. She just said, "Owwwch!" But she couldn't hold back the tears on ear number 2. B.A. is by far my biggest weenie, so she went last. I really thought she was going to back out after seeing her sisters do it. But she did it. She was crying before it even happened, but she recovered fast. They are so excited. The rest of the mall trip was filled with talk about all the earrings they can wear. Oh, I almost forgot. We went to In-N-Out for dinner. Nice.

November 28th
Family pictures! We had a good time, and I can't wait to see them. Mads was hilarious. Every time we were in a group he would fart. Then he would announce that he farted, and everyone would laugh. Man, that kid farts a lot!

Was Here

Today...

1. Dare had a Thanksgiving program at school. The pictures were terrible, of course, but that is her cuteness poking out behind that darling pilgrim hat.
Things I want to remember:
this program was awesome
Dare doesn't like to dance
she is thankful for "Mom and Dad"

2. Rhon had a play that parents were invited to.
Things I want to remember:
Rhon likes to perform, but she gets shy
this was a fun play
second grade rules

3. In between these two performances, I saw Rhon at recess. I thought it was interesting how she was spending her time. She was taking a very slow stroll along the perimeter of the playground with 3 other girls. It seems like the kind of thing I did when I was in sixth grade. Hmm...

4. I didn't want to go all the way home after Rhon's thing because the girls had a half-day... blah blah blah. Anyways, we decided to go to a kindergarten friend's house. I noticed some snow on the driveway, and it was on an incline, so I told the kids when they got out of the car to go through the grass to their front door. I thought everything was cool until I got around to the other side of the car. I noticed something you only see in the movies or cartoons. There was about 10 little footprints about 4 inches deep in Kazie's sidewalk. It was in the shape of a perfect semi-circle. I was confused at first. I didn't believe this had anything to do with me. Then I looked down at Mads' (who was now standing, dumbfounded, in the grass) feet. He had concrete completely covering his shoes and a little on his pants. Oh no! I couldn't believe it. I thought for sure I was going to have to pay someone hundreds of dollars to come fix the sidewalk. Luckily the guys who were doing it were still around. They fixed it. He said it was easy to fix when it was still so wet. They must have just done it considering how far he sunk in. The guys even washed his shoes off for me. I wish I would have taken a picture.

5. Wesley got neutered. Poor dude. He has to wear The Cone of Shame. I'm pretty sure I heard him say, "I do not like The Cone of Shame."

6. We had some Arizona friends over. Good times.
Rhon and Sophie singing 'Hungry Like the Wolf'.
Busy day.

da Prince

1. Favorite things: candy and garbage trucks

2. Dislikes: eating dinner and going to bed
snow-gear

3. He has to sleep with a toy car. Every night. And it can't just be any car, it has to be either a garbage truck or a red pick-up truck. You should see me hunting all over at bedtime, just so he won't cry too much.

4. He LOVES garbage trucks. In fact, he thinks all trucks are garbage trucks. During each of our trips to school, he says "barburr cuck" like 493 times. And he keeps saying it over and over until I respond. I try to tell him that some are semi-trucks and some are dump trucks. But he doesn't believe me. (See #6.)
with Wesley

5. He loves to be naked. This is no surprise. But he is almost completely potty trained because of it.

6. He is just as stubborn and obstinate as all the other kids. Already.

another snow-gear fashion statement

7. He gives the best hugs. He learned to say "anaconda squeeze" very early. (Nacho Libre.)

8. He gives the best kisses. Often times, he will kiss me on each cheek, nose, and chin before he plants a juicy one right on the lips.

no shirt, no shoes, no service- Part 2

9. He loves to color. Unfortunately, his standards are low. He doesn't care with what he colors, or on what he colors.

10. He is very charming and he loves to make people smile.

Enjoy a G montage...

The Smallest Prime

G woke up on his birthday 100% settled in the "terrible twos" phase. Only, what does that mean really? Can he be worse than his "ones" or "nones"? Yah, he can. He proved it on his birthday. Not only was he a trouble maker, but he was whiny, clingy, and cranky. But I love him. I couldn't ask for a more loving, fun, happy, two-year-old.

The Party.
Texas Sheet Cake is wonderful with ice cream. It is my new go-to birthday cake.

Fun for the whole family.

I think I may have picked the most perfect present of my mother career. G is obsessed with garbage trucks. So much so that it will have a post of it's own sometime. Plus, Mads loves it, and it even occupies the girls here and there.
